Pick orders

In the worker app, Pick takes you through an order, one pick at a time. You scan an empty tote, jtWMS gives you the next order to pick, and for each pick you go to the location, scan it, scan the product and enter how many you picked. When the order is done, you take the tote to outbound staging.

A pick in the worker app on a phone: the location, the product and how many to pick

  • Picking comes with the Outbound feature, on the Pro plan and above. Without it, the screen reads “Your plan doesn’t include Outbound”.
  • Pick appears in the bottom navigation for people who hold outbound.picking.manage and outbound.orders.read (or outbound.orders.manage). The Operator, Warehouse Manager and Tenant Admin roles hold them.
  • Orders are ready to pick once their wave is released and stock is reserved for every line (the order is Allocated).

jtWMS hands out the most urgent ready order first (the lowest priority number), then the oldest. Once you have an order it’s yours until it’s picked: scanning a tote again, even after leaving the screen or signing out, brings you back to it. While the only picks left on your order are the ones waiting for jtWMS to confirm, you get the next order instead.

Each order you pick takes all its picks, in the order you walk the warehouse: by location.

Tap Pick in the bottom navigation, then:

  1. Scan a tote: scan the label of an empty tote in Tote. The screen shows the order, the tote and how many picks are done, and the first pick: the location in large type, the product and how many to pick. If no order is ready, the screen says so: scan the tote again later.
  2. Location: go to the location and scan its label. A different location is refused (“A1-P2 isn’t the pick location. Go to A1-P1 and scan its label.”), so you can’t pick from the wrong place.
  3. Product: scan the product’s barcode, or its SKU. A different product is refused, naming the one to pick.
  4. Quantity picked: enter how many you put in the tote, then tap Confirm into followed by the tote’s code. You can’t confirm more than the pick asks for. If you confirm fewer, the rest of the pick stays on screen to pick from the same place.
  5. The next pick follows straight away. When every pick is done the screen reads, for example, “Order SO-10421 is picked. Take tote TOTE-0042 to outbound staging.”, naming every tote the order’s picks went into, with what each pick came to, and Next tote is ready for the next order.

Back returns to the step before, keeping what you’ve scanned.

A wrong location or product scan is checked on the phone, before anything is sent: it never changes the order.

When there isn’t enough at the location:

  • Some found: enter how many you found in Quantity picked, tap Report a short, then tap again to confirm (“Tap again: found 2 EA of 5 EA”). What you found goes into the tote.
  • None found: at the product step, tap None here: report a short, then tap again to confirm.

The rest of the pick is recorded as short and the order ships without it. Supervisors see shorted picks on the order’s page in the admin app.

Each pick you confirm moves stock into the tote, which normally takes a moment. You don’t wait for it: the next pick is on screen at once, and the order’s summary says “waiting for Inventory” until every pick is confirmed. After the last pick the screen reads “Inventory is confirming the picks into” the tote, then that the order is picked.

If a pick is refused, for example because the stock was moved in the meantime, the pick comes back on screen with what’s left to pick and why it was refused: pick it again.

A tote holds one order at a time. If the tote you scanned already holds another order, confirming a pick says so and asks for another tote: scan an empty one in New tote, then confirm the pick again. What you scanned and the quantity are kept. Change tote does the same at any time, for example when the tote is full; the picks already made stay in the first tote.

Leave this order returns to the tote scan. While the order still has picks to do, it stays yours: scanning a tote brings you back to it, with those picks. If the only picks left are waiting for jtWMS to confirm, scanning a tote gives you the next order instead, as described in Which order you get; the screen says which when you leave.

While you’re offline, the tote scan and the confirm and short buttons are disabled, with a message saying why (“You’re offline. Confirming a pick needs a connection.”). What you’ve scanned and typed is kept, so when the connection returns you tap the button again. Nothing is saved to send later.
